“I have found [LCS lean certification] to be a hugely worthwhile and interesting process. It’s been a real learning experience for me…and has certainly developed my own thinking”.
Successful L3 lean certified candidate, 2015
Level 3 Programme Overview
Level 3 lean certification indicates that the holder has a mature and broad understanding of lean thinking, is a capable lean leader and is able to effectively design and implement lean programmes at a strategic level.
LCS Level 3 lean certification is the natural progression for experienced LCS Level 2 managers, who have developed strong leadership capabilities and strategic implementation experience.
It is also designed for senior managers who have developed an extensive knowledge and mature appreciation of lean thinking over their careers and have considerable experience in designing and leading lean programmes in organisations, but have no formal lean certification.
LCS Level 3 lean certification is gained by completing a Level 3 Programme, which entails submitting a portfolio of evidence that demonstrates capability. Note that the programme does not include a formal teaching element, though there is significant learning from critical reflection and analysis.
The portfolio of evidence that demonstrates candidates have:
- Significant experience in designing, leading, implementing lean strategies and programmes.
- A progressive and mature understanding of lean thinking and related improvement philosophies and their associated tools and techniques.
It is developed over a period of several months with support and guidance provided by an LCS Level 3 Advisor.

Three Case Studies, demonstrating lean implementation at a strategic level, where the effective application of lean principles have produced an organisational benefit at an appropriate scale and level. The candidate’s role should have high levels of responsibility in terms of leadership, planning, design and management.
Assignment. 4,000 words on the development and evolution of lean thinking; this formally assesses the depth and maturity of the candidate’s lean knowledge and understanding, in which the candidate researches and reviews lean literature and demonstrates independent thinking, critical analysis and evaluation.
Panel Presentation. Routes to Level 3
There are three routes to achieve Level 3 certification:
- Undertake the programme on an individual basis, managed by the LCS centrally.
- Join a group programme, managed by the LCS centrally.
- Undertake the programme on an individual basis, managed by a an organisation with Level 3 lean accreditation.
In the case of routes 1 and 3, these can be started at any point in the year, whereas route 2 has specific starting points, usually in the spring and autumn each year. The group size is usually limited to between four to six people.
The Level 3 lean certification programme will usually take around six to nine months to complete, though the timing is more flexible when undertaken on an individual basis.
For all routes, support and guidance is provided over the programme by a Level 3 Advisor, from either the LCS centrally or by an organisation with Level 3 lean accreditation.
Note that for route 3, the completed portfolio of evidence is submitted to the LCS for final endorsement and grading.
